Challenges and Opportunities
How can we learn from the city, as an architecture of hybrid cultures, open technologies
and Integrated infrastructures as one system?
How can we design neighborhoods, upgrading and recreating new relations between the
traditional hillside settlements (Mahala) and the rapidly urbanizing valley?
How can we build on the idea of a learning city (Madrasa) shaping spaces for knowledge
production, environmental engagement and digital lifestyles?
Sarajevo`s urban morphology, form and rich architectural heritage are a result of a mix of cultures, lifestyles, and historical events, from the Ottoman Mahalas and Madrasas[1], to the Austro-Hungarian and socialist era, the city expansions for the mega event of the XIV Olympic Winter Games in 1984 and the conflicts endured in the 1990ties urbicide[2]. Today, facing waves of privatization, a 40-year delayed development in maintenance, repair and city-making, the highest levels of air and water pollution, and environmental degradation in Europe, Sarajevo is on a crossroads of following the path of environmental and urban decay or becoming an example for and climate-caring net-zero city. The pressure of modernization, climate action, and social justice is most evident in Sarajevo`s hillsides, self-constructed housing stock, which lacks basic service infrastructure and social facilities at large, searching for a relation to the productive valley. Digitalization, and Ecologization require radically new readings of Sarajevo, its multilayered morphology, and the design of new connectivity, and flows between the historic neighborhoods, peripheral living quarters, and new centralities.
